It's Pride Month, and here's a piece by Libi detailing why the climate crisis also affects the LGBTQIA+ community.
As the climate crisis continues in urgency
So does the amount of lgbtq+ community being declined homes
Being kicked from their families lives
Becoming homeless
And as this happens our planet is screaming in one natural disaster after the other
And the impacts of this affect marginalised groups more than those of privilege, one of these being those from the lgbtq+ community.
It's an obvious statement to make that the homeless community is one of these groups but one fact that may go unnoticed is 24% of the homeless youth are lgbtq+.
From more frequent and powerful storms to longer and more intense heatwaves the homeless suffer at the consequences of capitalism and ignorance. Unlike so many of us who take for granted the privileges we use everyday, such as access to clean water and somewhere to keep warm, the homeless can't turn to the comforts we are now so accustamed to as they experience, more than most, the full extents of climate change so far.
Not only does climate change affect those already homeless but it also plays a huge creating homelessness, with floods, hurricanes and wild fires on the rise, the amount of displaced people is increasing, this particularly affecting people of colour, people from low income areas and less developed countries
