So, who are you?

Hey, I’m Joe. I’m a 17-year-old climate activist from Wiltshire, you may have seen my face a bit on our in the news page! I’ve been a volunteer at UK Student Climate Network since February last year, in this role I came up with the idea of Teach the Future and founded the campaign in July. Between July and December I was the sole volunteer working on Teach the Future, in December we expanded to over 20 volunteers and have been able to achieve even more since then.

Why is Teach the Future/Climate Education important to you?In January last year, I remember watching a video about the devastating drought which has affected huge parts of Malawi over the past few years. The video was shocking, but what I found particularly troubling was a comment at the end, that this drought was almost certainly made worse by climate change. Until that moment, I had no idea that climate change was happening now, and I definitely had not realised that it was causing death and poverty across the world. This realisation made me angry, angry that despite 13 years of education I had never been told the basic fact that climate change was already happening and that it was killing people. From this moment I knew the education system had failed me, and that it needs to be urgently reformed.

What are you bringing to the team?I’m a pretty good independent problem-solver, which is how I was able to start the campaign in the first place and how I know I can help its journey forwards. I’m also pretty techy, I created and run this website, so hope to unleash the campaign’s full digital potential. If you want to get in touch with me to talk about the campaign do not hesitate to contact me at joe.ukscn@gmail.com .

What's a fun fact about you?I am fascinated by insects, particularly ants. I have several ant colonies in my room taking up a couple of shelves, for my A level EPQ I made a documentary comparing two different species of ants and as a result of this, I have an unhealthily large amount of knowledge about these awesome little creatures.
