Launch day

Today we launch #TeachTheFuture - our campaign calling on government to repurpose the entire English education system around the climate emergency and ecological crisis.

On 20th September we saw 100,000 people in London and 7.6 million people worldwide strike for climate action. Adults stood in solidarity with young people to call for urgent action to reverse the climate crisis.

We now call on government to ensure all students learn about the climate emergency and ecological crisis. It is insufficient to include climate change only in a few subjects.

68% of students want to learn more about the environment and climate change, but 75% of teachers feel they haven’t received adequate training to teach them. If young people learn about the climate emergency and ecological crisis we can prevent the mistakes of the past and change the course of history. Climate change should be treated as a learning entitlement and made an educational priority.

We have six demands:

1. A government commissioned review into how the whole of the English education system is preparing students for the climate emergency and ecological crisis.
2. Inclusion of the climate emergency and ecological crisis in teaching standards.
3. An English Climate Emergency Education Act.
4. A national climate emergency youth voice grant fund.
5. A Youth Climate Endowment Fund.
6. All new state-funded educational buildings should be net-zero by 2020; all existing by 2030.
