So, who are you?

Hiya! I’m Mary, I’m a 16-year-old climate activist from Surrey. I began my activism in March 2019 when I attended my first climate strike in London and have been a member of UKSCN ever since, working with schools across the country to enact change within their educational environment. I joined TtF in December 2019 in the lead up to the parliamentary reception and have been gripped ever since. I’m so excited to assist the continuation and expansion of TtF in my new role!

Why is Teach the Future/Climate Education important to you?I first started campaigning for climate education after comparing geography lessons with some friends: one of them was told that allegedly “a benefit of the climate crisis was the ability to grow more grapes in the UK”. The prospect of that sole lesson being my peers’ only understanding of the climate crisis, that will inevitably and irreversibly shape every part of our future, terrified me. I believe that education is the root of all change and all students and teachers should be adequately equipped to understand, face the effects and mitigate the consequences of the climate crisis.

What are you bringing to the team? With over a year’s experience generating political and educational change, I’m a keen problem solver and strategic thinker. I am very determined, self-motivated and an enthusiastic team member and public speaker. Yet above all, I believe it is my passion for political change that will advance the campaign the most. I am so keen to get further stuck into so many aspects of TtF as a Campaign Coordinator and am excited to keep you all updated on all our exciting work! Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any questions.

What's a fun fact about you?I spent 3 weeks in Greenland last summer, camping in the wild and periodically on polar bear watch, in order to conduct scientific research on glacial retreat.
