News Round Up!

On Friday (28th January), our Climate Education bill was set to be in Parliament for its Second Reading. Unfortunately, the House of Commons ran out of time and didn’t get round to voting on our bill, therefore it’s been pushed back to March 18th. Although we’re sad that we have to wait even longer now for our Second Reading, we are still super excited about all the media and press coverage we got last week! Hopefully, this raised awareness of our campaign and drew more attention to our bill and our new teacher research nevertheless! Here’s a little news round up of the press coverage we got last week.

‘Their voices can’t be ignored any longer’ was the title of our article in the Big Issue! In this article, our very own Scarlett Westbrook who has been leading on the policy work for our campaign got a mention! ‘In Summer 2020, 17-year-old climate activist Scarlett Westbrook opened her GCSE geography exam to a question asking her to list the benefits of climate change….’ Following this, we made it into The Guardian with the title, ‘UK pupils failed by schools’ teaching of climate crisis, experts say’ and The Independent where attention was drawn specifically to our bill: ‘Compulsory climate education bill to be discussed in parliament’. Similarly, our ‘passion for climate education’ was noted in this article by the Smiley Movement and the Tes Magazine put the cards on the table stating that ’Schools risk teaching about a 'world that won't exist’’ unless climate education is added to the curriculum.

Moreover, earlier in the week, The Metro released an article titled, ‘Kids aren’t being taught about climate change properly, say unions’ pinpointing the support that climate education has received from unions.

And finally, ‘Two thirds of teachers think climate change education ‘not meaningful’ donned many news outlet headlines on Thursday following the release of our new teacher research. This was published in the Evening Standard, The Independent, the Jersey Evening Post, the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, the Press & Journal Evening Express, The Daily Mail Online, the Express & Star , the Daily Echo, the York Press and Yahoo News to name a few!!

We are super grateful for all the coverage we’ve received and can’t wait to be back in Parliament in March to make some more noise about climate education!
