Happy New Year!
Welcome to 2022; we hope that for many of you it’ll be better than 2021. Here at Teach the Future, we’ve got a lot of plans in the works, so read on to hear what’s in store!
As you may know, our English Bill had its first reading on the 23rd of November. On January 28th, it will have its second reading in the House of Commons, where MPs can vote on whether they want this Bill to carry on or not. This is a crucial stage for our Bill because we need at least 40 MPs present for a vote to take place and our Bill to be in with a chance of progressing. In the run-up to the reading, we’ll meet with MPs and Whips from across the parties to give us the best shot at having enough MPs present. Alongside this, we’ll be running some neat social media activities for you and MPs to join in with!
Towards the end of January, we’ll run more UK wide onboarding sessions! If you want to join Teach the Future or get more involved in climate action, make sure to sign-up using the Volunteer page on our website, and keep an eye out for onboarding dates on social media. As well as taking on new volunteers, Teach the Future will be introducing new campaign coordinators for each devolved nation.
In February, Teach the Future Wales will celebrate its first birthday! Since they began in February 2021, Teach the Future Wales has worked tirelessly to build its profile and following. Now, it’s ready to write a Climate Education Bill dedicated to Welsh legislation and its curriculum, and we can’t wait to hold a Senedd reception with them!
For our Scottish readers, don’t worry, Teach the Future Scotland are busy writing their own Climate Education Bill too. We have a lot of plans to meet with MPs and MSPs in the coming year. In addition to individual meetings, we hope to hold a Parliamentary reception at the Scottish Parliament, bringing wider attention to Climate Education. Please send your local MP or MSP our letter if you haven’t already. The more constituents show support for us, the more likely they are to support us too!
While Teach the Future has done a lot of political work, we are still an Education campaign. We understand the importance of being fully informed by those in the education system. Throughout 2022, we’ll continue to communicate with teachers and students across the country about what they want from Climate Education. We’ll release new research into why teachers can’t currently deliver Climate Education. The government’s stance is that teachers can add Climate Education into their lessons if they wish, but very few can do this now.
To stay updated on Teach the Future’s plans and achievements, keep an eye on our social media. We’ll also include plenty of information on how you can support Teach the Future, and how to get involved in climate activism.
We wish you all the best for 2022!
