Tomorrow, March 18th 2022, our Climate Education Bill is back in Parliament for its Second Reading in the House of Commons. Proposed by MP Nadia Whittome, the Climate Education Bill is a Private Members Bill written by students and young people from Teach the Future. The Bill was first proposed in Parliament in the form of a 10 minute debate in November 2021. A few of us were allowed to attend this and watch Nadia Whittome put it forward. You can read Tess’s perspective here and watch the full recording of it here.

Once it had passed its First Reading, it was called for a Second Reading in the House of Commons which was originally planned for the 28th of January. Sadly, we were too far down the ballot paper so the MPs ran out of time and didn’t manage to get round to discussing our Climate Education Bill. Therefore, it was pushed back to tomorrow (March 18th). But unfortunately, it looks like the same instance will occur. There are so many bills on the list that it is unlikely that MPs will get to ours.
However, we have not lost hope! Stay tuned, there are some opportunities in the pipeline for our Bill to finally have its Second Reading and move forward, getting closer to becoming law! We have the support of several political parties and MPs so the future's looking bright. We just have to hang in there and play the waiting game!
Nevertheless, alongside our Climate Education Bill there are a couple of other exciting bills on the ballot paper tomorrow to keep an eye on, including the Climate and Ecology Bill proposed by MP Caroline Lucas and the British Sign Language Bill proposed by MP Rosie Cooper which is in its final stages! Sending luck and solidarity to those working behind the scenes on these!
