From November 1st to November 12th this year COP26, the Conference of Parties for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will be held in Glasgow. Each country sends delegates to negotiate at the event (parties) including heads of state, climate experts and negotiators.

One of the first negotiations includes the Kyoto Protocol negotiated in 1997 in Japan and came into force in 2005. This was the first legally binding greenhouse gas reductions commitments however key countries such as the US and Canada did not sign it. The most known negotiations are from COP21 when the Paris Agreement (2015) was made. This agreement committed countries to limiting global warming to well below 2°C and making efforts to limit it to 1.5°C with a focus on equity.

Negotiations at COP26 are a key part of collective climate action however many solutions can be implemented outside of COP on a national and international basis. The large profile of COP makes it a central space for climate activism and a great opportunity to influence decisions on climate action and further implementation of the Paris Agreement.

As well as the negotiations, there is also space for countries, international organisations and other delegates to showcase climate action, highlight diverse climate change issues and share knowledge.

This can be done in the Green Zone or throughout the COP26 area such as the Host City Zone and surrounding city. Keep an eye out over the coming months to hear more about our plans for COP26.
