Candidate's Responses

  1. Do you support the integration of climate change throughout every subject?

Climate change is the most urgent issue facing humanity today. It may already be too late to avoid breaching the 1.5 degree limit that was internationally agreed. Progress is simply not being made fast enough.
  2. Do you support the teaching on solutions for climate change, as well as the causes and impacts?

We need to be honest that some warming cannot now be prevented. Certainly mitigation is urgently needed. The least we can do is slow down the increase in warming. Certainly I would focus on the harm being done by the extraction and burning of fossil fuels, and stress that ending our reliance on fossil fuels is the first and biggest step we can take. After that, I would focus on promoting a transition to a plant-based diet.
  3. Do they support more training for all teachers around the climate crisis?

Yes - however, there is considerable misinformation in the public domain designed to confuse and downplay the issue. Exactly who would provide the training, and what it would comprise, would be important factors to consider.
  4. Do they support more money being spent to upgrade schools so they are carbon neutral?

Yes, and this can be done alongside the repairs that are already badly needed. School buildings that are well-designed for cooling in hot weather, can generate their own energy with solar panels, and have heat pumps installed, have lower bills too.
  5. Do they support more green skills being taught in job-related education?

Yes, because this industry will be essential in future, and China is already a world-leader in green technology. Essentially, all skills will need to become green skills.
