Candidate's Responses

  1. Do you support the integration of climate change throughout every subject?

Climate change will impact all aspects of our lives, and therefore should be taught throughout the curriculum. A purely science/geographical based approach would neglect the power that subjects like music, drama and English have to allow children to process an overwhelming issue like climate change. Our history curriculum should also be honest and informative about how we have reached this point of climate emergency.
  2. Do you support the teaching on solutions for climate change, as well as the causes and impacts?

We already know what we need to do to reduce the impact of climate change. It is vital that teacher's deliver a positive message about what needs to be done, and make pupils feel part of the solution and that there is hope.
  3. Do they support more training for all teachers around the climate crisis?

Carbon literacy training should be a compulsory part of teacher training. Teacher's need to be able to deal with children's fears and concerns about this subject from a position of knowledge, and fairly deal with questions from potentially sceptical parents.
  4. Do they support more money being spent to upgrade schools so they are carbon neutral?

I absolutely support this and I'm proud to say that I have been instrumental in getting 946 solar panels installed on our local secondary school.
  5. Do they support more green skills being taught in job-related education?

We are currently struggling to meet the skills need for the Green transition. More funding is needed in Further Education in particular to create a skilled workforce for the retrofit and for low-carbon energy industries. We also need to attract great teachers from out of the green industries to help upskill our existing and future tradespeople.
